A ‘dangerous’ asteroid the size of an airplane is approaching us in the new year, find out

Asteroids continue to come closer to Earth. This process will continue into the new year as well. The US space agency NASA has reported that an asteroid the size of a commercial airplane is heading towards our Earth. It will pass very close to Earth, so NASA has placed it in the ‘potentially dangerous’ category. Asteroids are rocks that move in space and pass close to our planet from time to time. Scientists continue to monitor its direction. If an asteroid hits the earth, it can wreak havoc. It is said that millions of years ago, the extinction of the dinosaurs on our earth was also due to the collision of an asteroid.

According to information, an asteroid named (2022 YR1) will approach our Earth on January 1, 2023. When it is closer to Earth, the distance between the two will decrease to 38 lakh 80 lakh kilometers. (2022 YR1) size is about 72ft. It is as big as an airplane. This asteroid belonging to the Apollo group of asteroids has been discovered this year.

Asteroids are also called minor planets. Just as all the planets in our solar system revolve around the Sun, asteroids also revolve around the Sun. Asteroids are divided into three classes: C, S, and M types. C-type asteroids (chondrites) are the most common. They are probably made of clay and silicate rocks and are dark in appearance. It is one of the oldest things in the Solar System. S-type asteroids are composed of nickel-iron silicate material. While M-type asteroids are metallic (nickel-iron). Its composition depends on the distance from the Sun.

When asteroids come close to Earth, scientists find out the distance between them and the planet. This work is done with the help of satellites and radars. Most asteroids orbit in the main asteroid belt between the planets Mars and Jupiter, but many asteroids have orbits that pass close to Earth. Asteroids that cross Earth’s orbital path are known as Earth-crossers.
