Foreign ministers of Southeast Asian nations resolved on Saturday to end talks with China on a proposed deal aimed at preventing conflicts in the disputed South China Sea at their annual meeting in the Indonesian capital. In the final session of the two-day meeting, the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) ministers discussed their approach to implementing the five-stage deal reached in 2021 between the organization’s leaders and Myanmar’s military leader, Commanding General Min Aung. Hlaing also agreed to join.
The agreement focuses on improving the deteriorating situation in Myanmar. China and ASEAN countries have been negotiating a “code of conduct” for territorial rules aimed at preventing conflicts in disputed waters in the South China Sea. Indonesian Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi, the organization’s chair this year, said his country was ready to host more rounds of talks on the proposed deal, the first of which will take place in March. He said that the ASEAN members are determined to conclude the discussions as soon as possible.
