A brilliant performance from the bowlers led by Avesh Khan (4/24) helped Madhya Pradesh make a brilliant comeback by pooling Andhra to just 93 runs in their second innings on the third day of the Trophy quarter-final match Ranji on Thursday. Trailing by 151 runs in the first innings, Madhya Pradesh hit a target of 245 runs to win and by the end of the day’s play, the team had scored 58 runs without losing. Andhra captain Hanuma Vihari showed great spirit in the second innings as in the first innings and came out to bat at number 11 despite a serious wrist injury.

Right-handed batsman Vihari batted left-handed to prevent the injury from aggravating and chipped in 15 runs to take the team’s score to over 90. He also hit three fours in his 16-ball innings. Earlier, Madhya Pradesh started the day at 144 for four in the first innings, but left-arm fast bowler Prithviraj Yara took five wickets to pack the team for 228. Andhra scored 379 runs in the first innings.

Yara took five wickets for 26 runs in which he showed the way to the pavilion for Harsh Gawli (1), Saransh Jain (8), Avesh Khan (15) and Kumar Kartikeya (24) on Thursday. Madhya Pradesh had lost eight wickets for 179 runs, but Karthikeya and Avesh shared a 48-run partnership to take the team’s score to 220. Madhya Pradesh then bowled Andhra’s second innings for 93 in 32.3 overs. Avesh got good support from Gaurav Yadav (3/10), Kumar Kartikeya (2/41) and Saransh Jain (1/11).

For Andhra, Ashwin Hebbar made the biggest contribution of 35 runs in the second innings. He added 37 runs for the third wicket with Nitish Kumar Reddy (14). After the break of this partnership, the team lost wickets at frequent intervals. Madhya Pradesh needs 187 more runs to win. Starting pitchers Yash Dubey (24) and Himanshu Mantri (31) remain in the crease. Both shared a partnership of 58 runs for the opening wicket.
