Budget 2023: Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has made a big announcement in the overall budget for fiscal year 2023-24, saying that in the next 3 years, 38,800 teachers and support staff will be recruited in 740 Eklavya schools across the country . 3.5 lakh tribal students are studying in these schools. Nirmala Sitharaman said that there has been a significant increase in the budget of the Eklavya Model Residential Schools (EMRS) from Rs 1418.04 crore to Rs 581.96 crore. There was a budget of Rs 1418.04 crore in the year 2021, which was increased to Rs 2000 crore in 2022-23. The scheme helps make residential schools run for tribal students.
We told you that in the 2018 budget session, former Finance Minister Arun Jaitley had announced the plan to open Eklavya schools in tribal areas. In addition to providing education for tribal children at these schools, local arts, culture, sports and skill development of the tribal area are promoted.
The government had reported in Parliament in December 2022 that 41 percent of seats (2,892) were vacant in Eklavya schools.
