Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai said on Wednesday that every possible effort would be made to prevent the closure of Visvesvaraya Iron and Steel Limited (VISL)’s Bhadravati plant. Assuring a delegation of VISL employees that he visited them, Bommai said that this work will require everyone’s cooperation. The delegation approached him with a request to reject the proposal to close the factory.
Bommai said: “VISL has been an important factory. Many public sector units have been closed due to globalization. The process of closing this factory has also been initiated by the central government under the divestment plan, which is cause for concern. He said: “Karnataka iron ore is in demand. VISL must remain and efforts will be made to keep it operational. First the state government will try to stop the closing process and then there will be talks with other companies.”
Former PM HD Deve Gowda had also recently written to PM Narendra Modi, requesting him to instruct the Steel Ministry and Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) to halt the closure of VISL. The opposition leader in the Karnataka Legislative Assembly, Siddaramaiah, had also written to the Prime Minister opposing the plan to shut down VISL.
