South Korea’s previous government came under fire after the scandal came to light and there were mass protests across the country. Cho was also found guilty of abusing his power while serving as former president Moon Jae-in’s top aide.
A South Korean court on Friday sentenced the country’s former Justice Minister Cho Kuk to two years in prison and pleaded guilty to falsifying documents to get his children admitted to prestigious schools. South Korea’s previous government came under fire after the scandal came to light and there were mass protests across the country. Cho was also found guilty of abusing his power while serving as a top aide to former President Moon Jae-in.
He dropped an investigation into a former Financial Services Commission official believed to be close to Moon, who had been arrested for taking bribes from businessmen. However, the Seoul Central District Court decided not to immediately arrest Cho, saying there was no flight risk and his wife was already serving a prison sentence in connection with the admission of her children. Cho told reporters after the sentence was announced that he was preparing to challenge the verdict. If Cho does so within the next seven days, he will avoid jail pending a decision by the Court of Appeals.
