France seizes Iranian assault rifles, sends missiles to Yemen

The authorities reported on this on Thursday. The weapons seizure took place on January 15 in the Gulf of Oman, a body of water adjacent to the Strait of Hormuz. It is a narrow estuary of the Persian Gulf, which runs through the Arabian Sea to the Indian Ocean.

French marines seized thousands of assault rifles, machine guns and anti-tank missiles last month from an unidentified ship in the Gulf of Oman. These weapons were allegedly being shipped from Iran to the Houthi rebels in Yemen.

The US Central Command described the seizure as arms smuggling from Iran to Yemen. The image of these weapons being loaded onto an unknown ship was released by the US Central Command on Wednesday. The photographs show that these weapons include Chinese-made Type 56 rifles, Russian-made Molot AKS20U and PKM model machine guns. Central Command said the seized weapons included more than 3,000 rifles and 578,000 rounds of ammunition. Published photographs of the weapon show that it also carries 23 anti-tank missiles that are operated from containers.

A UN resolution has banned the supply of weapons to Iran-backed Houthi rebels. Houthi rebels captured the country’s capital in late 2014 and have been in conflict since March 2015 with a Saudi-led coalition that supports the country’s internationally recognized government. Iran, however, did not immediately react to the weapons seized by France. The US Army Central Command released images of the captured weapons. In the photographs, these weapons look similar to other Iranian weapons captured by the US military.

The announcement of the arms seizure from France comes at a time when Iran faces Western pressure over its shipment of drones to Russia in the war against Ukraine and ongoing military action there. Regional tensions have risen after an alleged Israeli drone attack on a military workshop in the Iranian city of Isfahan.
