Guyana’s President Mohamed Irfan Ali said on Saturday that his country has offered 200 acres of land for millet production and in return, India will provide technological assistance to increase its production. In his video message to the World Millet Conference held here, Irfan Ali said that millet is important to ensure food security around the world. The South American country of Guyana plans to increase millet production to improve national and regional food security.
The country aims to reduce its food import costs by 2025 and, in that direction, millet is an ideal solution to increase self-sufficiency. He said: “Guyana looks forward to strengthening its cooperation with India. Under this, Guyana has offered 200 acres of land for exclusive production of millet, and in return, India will provide technology and technical support for its production. Irfan Ali said millet is not only an economic and nutritious option, but also a can combat the uncertainties of climate change. .
He promised all possible help in the production and promotion of millet in 17 Caribbean countries. In another video address, Ethiopian President Sahle-Work Zewde said that millet would go a long way towards addressing food security challenges not only of sub-Saharan countries like Ethiopia, but of the entire African continent and the world. He said the ideas from this conference will also help shape the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals.
