chisinau: In Eastern European country Moldova, the government fell on Friday after the resignation of pro-Western Prime Minister Natalia Gavrilita. After Russia’s invasion of neighboring Ukraine, now the Prime Minister’s resignation has added to the woes of this small country already facing many crises.

Gavrilita said at a press conference that “the time has come for me to announce my resignation.” He said no one expected his government, elected in 2021, to face “so many crises after the Russian invasion of Ukraine.”

There were many problems during Gavrilita’s tenure as prime minister. These include a severe energy crisis triggered by Russia’s slashing of gas supplies, skyrocketing inflation, and a crisis in Moldovan airspace sparked by missile attacks on neighboring Ukraine.

“I took office as an anti-corruption, pro-development, pro-European mandate government at a time when corrupt schemes were strangling all institutions and powerful people were beyond the reach of the law,” Gavrilita said. “Shortly after that, we were faced with black energy marketing and those who did it expected us to give up,” she said.

Moldovan President Maia Sandu thanked Gavrilaita on Friday for her “sacrifices and her efforts to lead the country in times of crisis.” (agency)
