The Punjab government in Pakistan has told Chinese citizens living in the province that it will not provide security for everyone and that they should hire private security companies amid frequent terror attacks in the country. The directive was issued by the Punjab Province Home Department on Thursday, days after a deadly terror attack on a mosque in the Police Lines area of the city of Peshawar. The blast at the mosque killed 101 people, mostly police officers.
“The Punjab Home Department has ordered Chinese citizens living in the province or working with private companies to hire the services of Class A private security companies for their security,” the directive said. The government made it clear that it would continue to provide security for Chinese citizens working in the province in the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) and other government-related projects.
In recent times, there have been several incidents in Pakistan in which Chinese citizens living in the country have been targeted by both government and private projects. China has been pressuring Pakistan to provide adequate security for its citizens working in hot-spot areas of the country. In one such major incident in July 2021, ten Chinese nationals were killed and 26 others seriously injured in a suicide attack on a bus carrying Chinese personnel at the site of the Dasu hydroelectric project in the Kohistan district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, most of which were engineers.
