Pakistan has sought the help of Afghan Taliban chief Haibutallah Akhundzada to control the banned Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP). This was stated in a media report on Saturday. The TTP has been involved in several terrorist attacks in the country, including the recent terrorist attack on the Peshawar Mosque. Pakistan faces a serious terrorism problem not only in the country’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, but also in Balochistan and the Punjab city of Mianwali. The city borders the restive province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
A Taliban suicide bomber blew himself up during afternoon prayers at a Peshawar mosque on Monday, killing 101 people and injuring more than 200. According to ‘The Express Tribune’ newspaper, during Friday’s main committee meeting, the Pakistan’s civilian and military leaders decided to seek the intervention of the Afghan Taliban chief, Haibutallah Akhundzada, to control the TTP. The report said Pakistani Home Minister Rana Sanaullah, who attended the meeting on Friday, said the main plotters behind the Peshawar mosque attack could be in Afghanistan.
He said the federal government would take up the issue with their Afghan counterparts. Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif admitted on Friday that he had failed to prevent the Peshawar massacre and called for national unity to face the threat. Sharif told the meeting that there is a need for unity in the political sphere. This act of terrorism managed to defy the security checkpoint and reach the mosque. We must not hesitate to accept the facts.
Meanwhile, Pakistani authorities have claimed to have made significant progress in the Peshawar mosque attack investigation by identifying the suicide bomber through DNA samples. Police said DNA tests have been carried out and investigators are trying to trace the attacker’s family. The TTP had withdrawn the indefinite ceasefire with the government in June 2022 in November last year and ordered its militants to attack the security forces.
The terror team has threatened to attack top leaders of Prime Minister Sharif’s PML-N and Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari’s PPP if the ruling coalition continues to crack down on the militants. The TTP is believed to have close ties to al Qaeda.
