Police said Thursday there is still no evidence that a man who stored a large quantity of guns and ammunition in his apartment in Hollywood, California, planned the mass shooting. Braxton Johnson was arrested Tuesday after he allegedly made violent threats to security personnel stationed at his apartment and to passersby. Police searched Johnson’s apartment on the 18th floor and recovered two assault rifles and high-capacity magazines.
All of these weapons are prohibited in California. In addition, three semi-automatic pistols, a sniper rifle, a shotgun, and more than 1,000 rounds of ammunition were also recovered. Police had reported that several rifles were placed from windows that overlooked a nearby park. At a news conference Wednesday, police said it was highly likely that the officers who arrested Johnson “prevented a mass shooting.”
However, on Thursday, police retracted the statement, saying there was still no indication that Johnson was planning the mass shooting. Johnson (25) refused to accept the position on Thursday. The incident was reminiscent of the 2017 massacre in Las Vegas, in which a gunman fired 1,057 bullets from the 32nd floor of a building, killing 58 people. It was the deadliest mass shooting in United States history.
