William, Prince of Wales and Catherine, Princess of Wales, arrived in Boston for their first visit to the United States since 2014. The pair will be in the US for three days.

In a statement shared with CBS News, William said he and Kate were “thrilled to be back in the United States” and thanked Governor Charlie Baker and his wife Lauren Baker for their “warm welcome” in Boston. His first day in Massachusetts included a Boston City Hall tour with Boston Governor and Mayor Michelle Wu, and the couple planned to attend the Celtics game Wednesday night.

“On this, our first visit abroad since the death of my grandmother (Queen Elizabeth II), I would like to thank the people of Massachusetts, and Boston in particular, for the great tribute they have paid to the late Queen. He remembered his 1976 bicentenary visit very fondly,” added William.

On the trip, Royalty focused on environmental innovation and climate change solutions with stops at Greentown Laboratories in Somerville, Massachusetts, and a meeting with local organizations responding to sea level rise in Boston. The couple will visit Harvard University’s Center for the Developing Child and highlight the work of Roca, Inc., an organization dedicated to improving lives by addressing racism, poverty and incarceration.

On Friday, the couple will announce the winners of the Earthshot Awards, an award launched by William and David Attenborough in 2020. There are 15 finalists for five awards. The event is being held in Boston because it was the birthplace of former President John F. Kennedy, whose America’s Space Race speech inspired William and his partners to reach the same goal of curbing climate change, according to the award. Various landmarks in Boston, including the website City Hall and the JFK Library, will be lit green during the royal visit to celebrate the award, reports CBS Boston.

“My grandmother was one of life’s optimists. And so was I. That’s why we launched the EarthShot Prize last year with the ambition to create a truly global platform to inspire the hope and urgent optimism we want to save our planet’s future. William said in the statement: “Thank you to the people of Boston. I am very grateful for the permission to host the second year of the Earthshot Awards in your great city. Catherine and I look forward to meeting many of you in the coming days. ”

It was also announced on Wednesday that William and Kate will meet with President Joe Biden, who will be in Boston for a reception for the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee.

This is the royal couple’s first overseas trip since inheriting their new titles, a change following Queen Elizabeth’s death. As there was apprehension that the King’s death would affect the trip, it went ahead as planned.
