The data shows that the total planting area of ​​all rabi crops has risen to 720.68 lakh hectares in the 2022-23 crop year rabi season from 697.98 lakh hectares in the same period a year ago. According to the final data released by the ministry, the area cultivated with wheat has risen to 343.23 lakh hectares in the current crop year till February 3 from 341.84 lakh hectares in the previous year period. The planting area has been 2.52 lakh hectares in Rajasthan, 1.03 lakh hectares in Maharashtra, 94 thousand hectares in Bihar and 93 thousand hectares in Uttar Pradesh. In the case of rice, there has been a sharp increase in the cultivated area to 46.25 lakh hectares in this year’s rabi season as against 35.05 lakh hectares in the previous year period.

Telangana and West Bengal have recorded the largest increase in the area under rice cultivation. The ministry said in a statement that the rice-growing area is being diverted to other nutritious oilseeds, pulses and grains that require less water. The area cultivated with pulses has increased marginally to 167.86 lakh hectares in this year’s rabi season from 167.31 lakh hectares in the same period last year. Of which, the gram cultivation area decreased by 2.16 lakh hectare to 112.01 lakh hectare as compared to the same period a year ago.

In the case of oilseeds, the ministry said the planting area increased marginally to 109.84 lakh hectare in this year’s rabies season compared to 102.36 lakh hectare in the previous year period. Out of this, the rapeseed and mustard area is 98.02 lakh hectare. Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh have a major contribution in increasing the oilseed cultivation area. The area sown to nutritious coarse grains also increased marginally to 53.49 lakh hectare compared to the previous 51.49 lakh hectare.
