New DelhiNew Delhi: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Friday justified Congress Leader Rahul Gandhi’s decision to disqualify him from the Lok Sabha as a result of a court order, saying he has been punished for his “act”.
Addressing reporters at the Parliament House complex shortly after the notice of Gandhi’s termination of membership was made public, Union Minister Bhupendra Yadav said: “There is a difference between abusing and criticizing.” . Rahul Gandhi was abusing. He was not having a democratic debate. The CBOs were doing the job of abusing society… they have been punished for this act.”
Yadav was joined by Union Minister for Rule of Law and Justice SP Singh Baghel and Bharatiya Janata Party Chief Spokesperson and Rajya Sabha member Anil Baluni during the press conference. Yadav said that in the case of Rahul Gandhi, full procedures were followed and he was also given an opportunity to present his case. “But when it comes to trial, congressional leaders are questioning the judiciary … using profanity,” he said.

“The government runs in this country according to the judicial process,” he said. Union Minister Yadav said that action has been taken in accordance with the decision given by the Supreme Court regarding the disqualification of the members. He said that the same has been done in the case of other public representatives. He said: “I still believe that by insulting the CBO community…by abusing it, Congress should also apologize along with Rahul Gandhi.”
It should be noted that Rahul Gandhi, representing the Wayanad parliamentary seat in Kerala, was disqualified from the Lok Sabha in view of his conviction in a libel case by a Surat court. In a notice issued by the Lok Sabha Secretariat, it has been said that the disqualification order for him will be effective from March 23. Union Minister of State for Law and Justice SP Singh Baghel called the disqualification “legitimate” and said everyone is equal before the law.

He said that recently a BJP MLA was disqualified in Uttar Pradesh after being convicted in a criminal case. Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi said the decision was legal and claimed that Congress was questioning the judiciary. “It is a legal decision and not a decision made by a political party. It is a decision made by a court. Congress should clarify who they are protesting against.”
Kaushambi BJP MP Vinod Kumar Sonkar said that Rahul has insulted the entire community and should be punished. “It is a decision of justice and for the way in which he defamed a community, he must be punished. This disqualification is a good message that no one is above the law.”
Notably, a Surat court on Thursday sentenced Congress leader Rahul Gandhi to two years in prison in a 2019 criminal libel case brought against him for his “surname Modi” remark. However, the court also granted Gandhi bail and stayed the execution of his sentence for 30 days, so that Congress leaders could challenge the verdict. (agency)
