Research says that brain flaccidity can be reduced in dementia patients. Recent research suggests that the possibility of brain dysfunction in patients with dementia may be reduced.

With age, changes occur in all organs of the body, as well as in the brain. Dementia is one of them. Due to this, the person’s ability to think, understand and work is affected. The memory loss that results from this severely affects a person’s daily life. Although memory loss is not a specific disease, it and many other diseases can lead to dementia. Research conducted at a US university suggests that when cerebrospinal fluid leakage around the brain is identified in a patient with dementia, the sagging of the brain, i.e., the causes of dementia, can be reduced.

What is this new dementia research about?

Cedars Sinai Medical Center, Los Angeles, USA, conducted an in-depth study in a patient with behavioral variant frontotemporal dementia. She said that until now it has been considered an incurable condition. This affects behavior and the ability of patients to function in daily life. Many patients develop severe cognitive, behavioral and personality changes (causes of dementia). Because of this, he too must be admitted to the hospital. This research has been published in the journal Alzheimer’s and Dementia: Translational Research and Clinical Interventions. Research findings may suggest a cure for dementia. If fluid leaks are detected, patients can be cured.

What is cerebrospinal fluid?

Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) surrounds the brain and spinal cord to help protect them from injury. When this fluid begins to leak, the brain can collapse. This can cause dementia symptoms. According to the researcher, brain flaccidity can be detected by magnetic resonance imaging.

It is necessary to detect headache or severe brain disease (Brain Tumor).

It is also important to know the patient’s history of severe headache. If the patient feels better when they lie down or continues to sleep despite getting enough sleep, these may be signs of dementia. The patient has previously been diagnosed with a specific encephalopathy. A condition in which brain tissue protrudes into the spinal cord.

Even when sagging of the brain is detected, it can be difficult to locate the source of the CSF leak later. When fluid leaks through a tear or cyst into the surrounding membrane, it only becomes visible with the help of CT myelography images.

The symptoms of brain flaccidity can be completely eliminated

Venous fistula can also be the reason for CSF leakage. In these cases, the fluid leaks into the vein. It is difficult to see on a routine CT myelogram. A special CT scan is used to locate these leaks.

In this study, the researchers used this imaging technique on 21 patients with floppy brain and symptoms of dementia. They discovered venous fistulas in nine of those patients. The fistulas of the nine patients were closed surgically. The symptoms of brain dysfunction or brain flaccidity completely disappeared.

In the end

The remaining 12 participants, whose leaks could not be identified, were treated with conventional treatments. Of these, only three patients felt relief from their symptoms.

However, this specialized image is not widely available. Therefore, this study suggests the need for further research to improve symptom recognition and cure rates.
