Chief Election Commissioner Kazi Habibul Awal on Sunday declared Awami League Advisory Council member and party candidate Chuppu elected unopposed as Bangladesh’s president after scrutiny of his nomination papers, the news agency reported. ONE B.
Former judge and freedom fighter Mohammad Shahabuddin Chuppu has been elected unopposed as the country’s 22nd president. The Bangladesh Main Election Commission gave this information on Monday. Chuppu, 74, will replace President Mohammad Abdul Hamid. The news said that the Chief Election Commissioner on Monday issued a gazette on the appointment of the new president of Bangladesh. Hamid’s term, Bangladesh’s longest-serving president, will end on April 23 and he cannot run for a third term under the constitution. Hamid, a senior Awami League leader and seven-time lawmaker, was elected president of Bangladesh in the last two elections.
He was sworn in for his second term on April 24, 2018. The president’s press secretary told UNB that Hamid greeted the newly elected president by phone and wished him success on Monday. After his retirement from the position of District and Sessions Judge, Chuppu served as one of the commissioners of the Independent Anti-Corruption Commission. He later joined politics and became a member of the Awami League Advisory Council, which comprises the party’s top leaders and technocrats. However, Chuppu has to step down from the party post to become the head of the nation.
