All the players want to join the new league, but in the future they will know which one is important. In such a situation, playing for the country will be preferred over league cricket. Sport is only possible with infrastructure and cooperation.

Calcutta. Former India captain Sourav Ganguly said on Monday that players’ preference for T20 leagues over international cricket is not sustainable as only a few financially sound leagues will be able to survive in future. With the growing number of T20 leagues around the world, players now prefer franchise cricket over playing for the country. After the Big Bash League, now the league is held in the United Arab Emirates and South Africa. Apart from this, a league in America is also planned at the end of the year.

Ganguly said in a Sportstar program that we keep talking about the leagues that happen around the world. IPL is a completely different league. The Big Bash League are also doing well in Australia and similarly The Hundred have been doing well in the UK. The South African league is also doing well. He said that all these leagues are held in countries where cricket is popular. I think only a few leagues will survive in the next four or five years and I know what they will be.

The former BCCI president said that at the moment all the players want to join the new league, but in the future they will know which one is important. In such a situation, playing for the country will be preferred over league cricket. In emphasizing the importance of cricket administration, he cited the example of Zimbabwe, where cricket declined due to administrative reasons.

He said that I was the president of the Bengal Cricket Association for five years and then the president of BCCI for three years. I have also represented India at ICC and have seen that the game is only possible with infrastructure and support. Ganguly said that I played in the first World Cup in 1999. Zimbabwe could have beaten anyone at that time. At that time, Zimbabwe Cricket did not have much money. India didn’t even have it. Where did the West Indies have money from during the time of Michael Holding, Andy Roberts or Joel Garner? he said. Good administration is very important to players. Money is not a problem. Having a good relationship between players and admins solves a lot of problems.
