Taiwan President Tsai Ing Wen welcomed the former head of the US Pacific Indian Command on Thursday amid increasing pressure from China on the self-governing island. The former admiral had warned of a Chinese attack on the island earlier in the decade. Retired Admiral Phil Davidson arrived in the capital Taipei on Monday with a group. His accompanying group includes colleagues from the US think tank ‘National Bureau of Asian Research’. Several delegates have traveled to Taiwan before Davidson arrived.

Regarding Taiwan, China claims that it is its part. In August last year, the then Speaker of the US House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi visited Taiwan, after which tensions between the US and China escalated. “I’m here to listen and learn from my hosts,” Davidson said. So far, I have done both.” She said, “I look forward to continuing my talks with President Tsai today and hearing his perspective on the security environment and his views on US-Taiwan relations.”

The Chinese People’s Liberation Army has increased its pressure on the island in recent years by sending warships and fighter jets near Taiwan. Taiwan’s Defense Ministry said Tuesday that 20 Chinese warplanes breached the center line and entered the Taiwan Strait. This center line has long served as an unofficial buffer zone between the two parties that broke away during the 1949 civil war.
