Increased discomfort due to cold winds.
Winds were gusting from 96 to 140 mph Friday at Mount Washington Peak in New Hampshire. Only three times the air temperature in the US at minus 100 degrees Fahrenheit had been recorded before Friday, meaning the weather on Mount Washington had already broken that record, according to the report. In the year 1934, the coldest temperature ever recorded at this station was -47 degrees Fahrenheit.

The Mount Washington Observatory mentioned in a blog post Friday morning that the wind chill on this peak can be very dangerous for the skin. New Hampshire organizations are planning emergency shelters and calling for help for the homeless. State officials advise residents there to be careful. People are urged to avoid hiking and other outdoor activities in the White Mountains due to dangerous conditions.
